speaking of pulling more weight

gossamergrins:

I pull about 28 lbs right now, but based on how easy it is for me to pull much heavier bows, I’m pretty sure I should be pulling closer to 40.

This means nothing to you if you’re not an archer, but EAT IT, COMPOUNDS.

Recurves FTW! Don’t go pushing yourself too much though if you do up your poundage. Can do some damage if you do. I did it a couple of years back, I only went up 8 lbs or so but mannnn did I feel it! Put my shoulders out and had a bit of trouble for a while.

Thanks for the support! I noticed in some of your archery photos you draw the string with your palm facing outward, do all compound shooters do this or is it just a different technique?

That probably wouldn’t have been me in those photos, I shoot recurve unless it was a one off photo, but in answer to the palm facing outwards thing, yes most compound archers do. It depends on whether you are using a release aid or not and what type of release aid you’re using. A standard thumb trigger release or back tension release would mean the palm faces outwards or towards the ground depending on what you find comfortable.

If you are using an index finger release then the hand position is different, like this: http://www.rightforu.com.au/ljac/step06.jpg

Some people don’t use release though but that will only be if they shoot field archery instead of target archery, in which case they will just hold it with their fingers like you would if you were shooting a recurve, like this: http://discrete.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/59292_434756103003_505753003_5303316_279096_n.jpg

Hope that answers everything!
